Capacity
The PDJ-C1080 Professional Disc Cart Machine is an automatic changer system for optical disc cartridges that features multiple video decks (PDW-1500 Professional Disc Recorders) and disc cartridge shelves called “bin units”. The PDJ-C1080 has the capacity for up to 4 PDW-1500 decks, with bins to hold up to 80 discs included in the standard product. In other words capacity is provided to load up to 113 hours of program material making this an ideal solution for automated playout and recording applications.

Standard Interfaces
By using standard VCC protocol for robotic control, the PDJ-C1080 has been designed as a “drop-in” replacement for existing flexicart systems, requiring minimal re-programming to interface with popular automation systems and reducing disruption to existing workflows.

The media files recorded on the XDCAM disc utilise industry standard MXF file format for interoperability with 3rd party devices and easy integration in networked MXF systems.

Transmission Applications
Replacing a Flexicart with the PDJ-C1080 requires almost no changes in current transmission workflows or infrastructure. TX Masters are simply created on Professional Disc instead of Betacam tape. The automation software application can then easily control playout from the PDJ-C1080.


Automated Ingest
The PDJ-C1080 removes the “ingest bottleneck” inherent with many production systems. Raw material recorded on Professional Discs can be copied automatically to the production domain, indeed the low-resolution proxy material can be transferred at over 30 times speed to allow the production staff to start working far in advance of what would be possible with conventional systems.

Near-line storage archive
The dual AV & network capabilities of the PDW-1500 Professional Disc recorders make the PDJ-C1080 an ideal solution for near-line storage applications. AV material can be moved to and from the Cart either by conventional SDI interfaces, or using faster than real time MXF file transfers. Built-in proxy generation provides a secure and accurate low-resolution copy of the original AV assets for use by Content Management applications.

High Durability
The PDJ-C1080 has the high reliability expected of Sony robotic systems. Additionally, Professional Discs have a natural advantage since they suffer no mechanical contact during recording or playback, making the format ideal for continuous operations. The Professional Disc is also highly resistant to dust, shock and scratches, packaged in an extremely durable and dust-resistant cartridge.

Flexibility of recording format
DVCAM and MPEG IMX 30/40/50 Mbps discs can be mixed within the PDJ-C1080 storage system, allowing the operator the flexibility to store programs in different formats depending on quality and storage requirements.

Reduced operating costs
The Professional discs can be re-used or re-recorded up to 10,000 times keeping long-term media costs to minimal levels.

Additionally, the 7-year laser warranty on the PDW-1500 deck drastically reduces routine maintenance costs compared with traditional magnetic tape based systems.

Easy integration with both IT and AV systems
The PDW-1500 professional disc recorders have both conventional AV interfaces including SDI and analogue video, as well as Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for file-based media exchange over standard IP networks. This allows for easy integration in both conventional AV broadcast systems, as well as networked production areas.

Fast material access.
The non-linear nature of the professional disc allows for fast cueing, and removes the need for any tape spooling. Gigabit Ethernet connectivity enables faster than real-time transfer of MXF media files to and from external IT-based networked production systems.

Benefits of Proxy AV Data
When a recording is made, a Proxy AV stream that is time code synchronized with the full-resolution stream is also recorded automatically on the disc. This Proxy AV Data, which is smaller in size, is easier to work with and can be transferred over common networks at much greater speeds. Proxy AV Data is highly effective for tasks where video and sound quality are of less concern, but content delivery speed is essential. The typical benefits of its use with the PDJ-C1080 include very high speed automatic ingest to production systems, and proxy generation for content management systems.

Security
The Professional Disc format gives the security and peace-of-mind that comes with using a directly playable media. In the event of emergency situations (ex. network breakdown etc.), the Professional Disc simply needs be loaded into any XDCAM player to directly access the AV material.
